Deploying Microsoft Exchange within virtual machines without knowing what performance to expect can make IT departments apprehensive. In this paper we have shown that a single uniprocessor Exchange 2003 instance running within a virtual machine on ESX Server 3.0.1 can comfortably support up to 1,300 Exchange users, and with four uniprocessor instances (or two SMP instances) this can be scaled to 4,000 Exchange users.

Exchange running on multiple uniprocessor virtual machines or half as many dual processor virtual machines shows insignificant performance differences. We thus recommend that the Windows and Exchange licensing costs, ease of management, and corporate standards should guide your configuration in this regard.

This paper also demonstrated the manageable overhead due to virtualization of an Exchange environment. A survey of the industry’s physical Exchange deployments in production revealed CPU underutilization, with an average peak load of about 16%. In the average and moderately more utilized Exchange deployments ample resources for virtualization overhead remain. With VMware virtualization providing features to reduce maintenance costs and eliminate downtime, a compelling case for virtualizing Exchange can be made.

Sysinternals, die Microsoft Tool Suite von Mark Russinovic, hat ein Tool zum Betrachten des Active Directory veröffentlicht. Mit dem Active Directory Explorer lassen zum, im Gegensatz zu integrierten Management Console, Suchkombinationen abzuspeichern und später wieder aufzurufen.

AD Explorer

Active Directory Explorer (AD Explorer) is an advanced Active Directory (AD) viewer and editor. You can use AD Explorer to easily navigate an AD database, define favorite locations, view object properties and attributes without having to open dialog boxes, edit permissions, view an object’s schema, and execute sophisticated searches that you can save and re-execute.

AD Explorer also includes the ability to save snapshots of an AD database for off-line viewing and comparisons. When you load a saved snapshot, you can navigate and explorer it as you would a live database. If you have two snapshots of an AD database you can use AD Explorer’s comparison functionality to see what objects, attributes and security permissions changed between them.

Support

Nicht öffentliche Hotfixes werden durch Microsoft nur nach Anfrage zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Bestellung von existierenden Updates ist generell kostenfrei, sofern das Produkt noch nicht im ”Extended Support” ist. Die Verarbeitung der Anfrage und Zusendung erfolgt in der Regel innert 24 Stunden. Ich habe in den meisten Fällen am selben Tag, meistens sogar innert wenigen Stunden, die benötigten Zugangsdaten für den Download zugestellt erhalten.

Hotfixes können nun auch über ein Webformular von der Microsoft Webseite beantragt werden. Neu wird direkt im Support KB Artikel angezeigt, ob ein Hotfix zum Download verfügbar steht:

This guide is designed for people who already know ESX 3.x and VC 2.x quite well. Although it starts as a beginners guide initially, it pretty rapidly starts to assume very good knowledge of the system. I would recommend you get to grips with the GUI first, and feel comfortable with Vi-3 before attempting this guide. That said – you might be wanting to carry out a discrete procedure from the command-line. So feel free to dip in – find what your looking for and then – dip out again!

Mit der Freeware FastSCP präsentiert Veeam einen kostenlosen Dateimanager für VMware ESX. Ein unverzichtbares Tool für jede virtuelle Infrastruktur. Aus meiner Sicht auch besser in der Handhabung als WinSCP. Der Download ist nach der Registrierung kostenfrei möglich. Veeam bietet auch weitere interessante Tools für VMware ESX, diese sind allerdings dann kostenpflichtig.
